چکیده

One of the most salient tasks in law is legal assessment, and concerns the problem of determining whether some case is allowed or disallowed given an appropriate body of legal norms. In this paper we describe a system and Protégé 4 plugin, called OWL Judge, that uses standard OWL 2 DL reasoning for legal assessment. Norms are represented in terms of the LKIF Core ontology, as generic situation descriptions in which something (state, action) is deemed obliged, prohibited or permitted. We demonstrate the design patterns for defining the norms and actual cases. Furthermore we show how a DL classifier can be used to assess individual cases and automatically generate a lex specialis exception structure using OWL Judge. We illustrate our approach with a worked-out example of university library regulations.

Automated Legal Assessment with OWL2

In this paper we describe the heart of HARNESS, a legal knowledge system that is developed in the ESTRELLA project. This heart consists of a reasoning engine that performs legal assessment tasks, i.e. determining whether some case violates and/or complies with legal norms. This assessment module uses three knowledge bases cast in OWL 2: a domain ontology, a set of norms and a case description. ...

Legal Assessment Using Conjunctive Queries

Using the Web Ontology Language (OWL) for knowledge representation in the legal domain is very promising but has some limitations. The language is complex thus hard to comprehend, still decidability results in a limited expressiveness which may introduce serious problems in modelling. An aspect of limited expressiveness is the tree-model property of OWL, which can be overcome using rule formali...

Experience of Using OWL Ontologies for Automated Inference of Routine Pre-operative Screening Tests

We describe our experience of designing and implementing a knowledge-based pre-operative assessment decision support system. We developed the system using semantic web technology, including modular ontologies developed in the OWL Web Ontology Language, the OWL Java Application Programming Interface and an automated logic reasoner. Using ontologies at the core of the system’s architecture permit...

Reasoning in the OWL 2 Full Ontology Language Using First-Order Automated Theorem Proving

OWL 2 has been standardized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as a family of ontology languages for the Semantic Web. The most expressive of these languages is OWL 2 Full, but to date no reasoner has been implemented for this language. Consistency and entailment checking are known to be undecidable for OWL 2 Full. We have translated a large fragment of the OWL 2 Full semantics into firstor...

Structured data acquisition with ontology-based web forms

Structured data acquisition is a common, challenging task that is widely performed in the field of biomedicine. However, in some biomedical fields, such as clinical functional assessment, little effort has been done to structure functional assessment data in such a way that it can be automatically employed in decision making (e.g., determining eligibility for disability benefits) based on concl...
